Twenty One Pilots — Christmas Saves The Year

"Christmas Saves The Year" is the second single and first ever Christmas track to be released by Twenty One Pilots after their fifth studio album, Trench. Like their first single during this post-Trench period, "Level of Concern," this song was also released during the global COVID-19 pandemic. In it, themes of longing and Christmas cheer are brought up, acknowledging the fact that many cannot go home to their families for the holidays this year due to the ongoing pandemic.

The song was teased originally as a "surprise gift" on Tyler Joseph's Instagram story on December 7th, 2020, where he called it a "stocking stuffer." Joseph said that the gift would be revealed at the end of the Christmas-themed Twitch stream where Joseph played Fortnite as part of the "Chipotle Challenger Series." The stream was organized by Joseph, bandmate Josh Dun, and creative/content director Mark Eshleman of ReelBearMedia to help raise money for Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The single was premiered on stream on December 8th, 2020 as an outro just before it officially premiered on YouTube, with a short intro from bandmate Josh Dun. The single is now available on all music-streaming platforms.

Although Joseph has mentioned working on another album at the time of the stream, "Christmas Saves The Year" along with "Level of Concern" do not seem to be part of any particular album. However, in the photo that the cover art is adapted from, there is a red present behind Tyler that has a nametag addressed to a "Clancy." This is a reference to the character that was used in the storyline of their album Trench.
