The song was recorded in 9 takes with the first take being the master. The "1-2-3-4" intro was from Take 9. Two overdub takes were recorded for handclaps numbered 10 and 11. Take 11 was used. The song was first released on Please Please Me, but was also released on Live At The BBC, Anthology 1, On Air - Live at the BBC, Vol. 2. Notable bootleg recordings have surfaced of the song being rehearsed in the Cavern Club in Liverpool and being performed live at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany in 1962.
