Spice Girls — Goodbye

Goodbye was the first release from the Spice Girls that did not feature Geri Halliwell. A pop power ballad designed for the lucrative Christimas market, the success of Goodbye seemed to indicate the popularity of the girls was still intact after the fallout from Halliwell's departure during their 1998 world tour.

The track was written by the girls with its producers Richard "Biff" Stannard and Matt Rowe. The production team were also behind many of the previous hits by the Spice Girls, including Wannabe, Viva Forever and 2 Become 1. Another platinum single in the UK and their third Christmas #1 in December 1998, Goodbye would sell over 800,000 copies alone in Britain and spend 21 weeks in the Top 75. It was the fourth highest selling single released by the Spice Girls in the UK, only outsold by Wannabe, Say You'll Be There and 2 Become 1.

As well as its UK success, the single hit #1 in Canada (for an incredible 16 weeks), Ireland and New Zealand. It was a hit in many other European and Asian territories during December 1998 and early 1999. It was another Top 3 smash hit in Australia, obtaining double platinum status.

It would also be the last Spice Girls track to make a signficant impact on the USA, peaking at #11 on the Billboard chart and was certified Gold for over 500,000 sales.

It is estimated that Goodbye has sold over 3.5 million copies worldwide.
