Lana Del Rey — High By The Beach

"High by the Beach" was released as the first single from Lana del Rey's fourth studio album, Honeymoon (2015). Written by Lana Del Rey, Rick Nowels, and Kieron Menzies, the track s more uptempo and pop-indebted than Del Rey's previous releases but prominently recalls the hip hop and trip hop influences of her 2012 album, Born to Die. The song is based around electronic production, a trap beat, and an orchestral organ arrangement.
Preceded by a premature online leak, "High by the Beach" was released as the lead single from Honeymoon on August 10, 2015. "High by the Beach" debuted at number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 a week after its release, spending three weeks on the chart altogether. The song also ranked at number 89 in Triple J's Hottest 100 songs of 2015 in Australia.

Lirically, "High by the Beach" is a metaphor for taking control of the situation in the face of an unhealthy relationship. The lyrics reflect a frustrated and disillusioned heroine who is tired of being a victim and decides to take matters into her own hands. By singing of wanting to "get high by the beach", Lana is expressing her desire for a means of escape from her current predicament. In addition, the lyrics express a sense of defiance and strength, where the heroine is no longer buying into the lies of the other party, but instead opting for revenge and freedom. Ultimately, the idea is to move on from the situation and find peace through personal liberation and empowerment.
